about
Taken from the charity release, ‘Songs for Karen’, in loving memory of Merry HQs mummy, Karen, who died unexpectedly in her 50s – devastatingly too soon, especially heart-breaking as she helped so many others in her life, leaving a big void.
The week after it happened, through pure coincidence, we had Chris Payn coming up to ours to record some music. The original song we were going to work on was a love song for Roxie which obviously wasn’t where our heads were at. Instead, we decided to get these three songs recorded for Karen’s funeral and recorded them that very weekend, in mourning, in tears, ripped to pieces – music pulled us through.
This song was originally written about insomnia and being awake with the birds on a summer’s morning although it remained unfinished until Mischa lost his Grandfather, and mentor, Luke, over the pandemic. It wasn’t until Karen passed, the same weekend it was recorded, that the song was finished, adding the Golden Days sentiment, in her memory.
The birds that feature in the song were recorded at #MerryHQ at specific and sacred times over Easter 2021, during Karen’s passing. They are the same birds that influenced the creation of the song and sung in harmony for Karen, on this recording.
It was also #MerryMaiden Roxie’s first time singing with the band, doing a duet with her husband, Mischa.
The artwork was done by our in-band #MerryMaiden Eleanor Pasco with the photo taken by Mischa.
This song is raising money for The Dorset Children's Foundation > thedcf.org < a zero admin (no-one gets paid / all money raised goes to the grassroots cause) charity which the Merry Many and Karen have helped support over the last few years. The fantastic work they do to support disabled children and their families is exceptional and literally changes lives – it’s a huge honour to dedicate this song, to this wonderful charity.
lyrics
This one goes out to old friends,
Those we’ve lost and won’t see again,
Whilst their time on this earth was short,
Their flames burn bright in all our thoughts
I can't sleep,
and I'm weak at the knees
But I will keep
Honouring your memories
Honouring your memory.
So I'm awake up with the birds,
My mind plays over their every verse.
Their melodies of lessons learnt
A chorus of wisdom earned
Cause I can't sleep,
and I'm weak at the knees
But I will keep
Honouring your memories
Honouring your memory
So, I rise, rise up with the sun
Your omens, show me, what is right from wrong,
And the sun, will shine, shine it's brightest rays,
To highlight, the joy, from our golden days.
To highlight, the joy, from our golden days.
Golden days,
From our golden days, our golden days, our golden.
Golden days.
This one goes out to old friends,
The golden days that we’ve spent with them.
